Music: Panama! Vol. 2 / Soundway Records
Soundway Records is a label based in UK that releases fantastic compilations of obscure and would-be-lost music from around the world. Records they’ve released in the past include “Nigeria Special, Modern Highlife, Afro-Sounds & Nigerian Blues 1970-6″, and “Ghana Soundz, Afro-Beat, Funk & Fusion in 70’s Ghana.” It’s a great kind of anthropological approach to music which I’m very much into, and is on a similar wavelength to labels like Sublime Frequencies (who I’ve blogged about here before) and Smithsonian Folkways.
The latest Soundway Records release, Panama! Vol. 2, is a danceable, rambunctious mix of little-heard music catalogued from recordings made in Panama during the late 1960s, which is full of boisterous horns and infectious latin grooves. Check out the video teaser above, and head over to the Soundway Records website to start unearthing some rare musical gems.
“Volume 2 showcases more of the unique tropical music created in Panama in the fertile decades of the 1960s and ’70s. The thin, tropical bridge that connects North and South America, Panama is home to three million culturally diverse people, and its’ music is a soulful blend of Latin American, Caribbean, European and Indigenous forms. From Calypso Funk to Típico Soul, from hard Descargas to rustic Cumbia-related styles, Panamanian musicians fearlessly combined and brilliantly executed styles that reflected their multi-cultural environment during a turbulent time in the young country’s history.”
