Editorial: Nat Illumine’s Subgenre Explorations

August 13, 2008 · Words: Martin S ·

I’m excited to present our readers a monthly series of articles exploring the growth of musical subgenres in the United Kingdom, written by London journalist, radio DJ, presenter and “ethnomusicologist of sorts” Nat Illumine– beginning the collection with this month’s piece on Nu Jazz, penned in anticipation of this weekend’s Portobello Nu Jazz Festival in London.

Nat will be– to borrow a phrase from fellow jazz-purveyor, BBC Radio 1 DJ Gilles Peterson– “Joining the Dots” between seemingly disparate tangents and microgenres in British music which have come to fruition in our streets, studios and clubs– and each month selecting a different musical grain– from Broken Beat and Nu Jazz, to Dubstep and Grime– to dissect.

We’re also publishing a special edition of the podcast shortly after each article, selecting a bunch of pivotal tracks to guide you through each genre. Enjoy part one of the series as Nat travels from jazz deity Miles Davis and boom-bap pioneer DJ Premier, to the artists defining Nu Jazz today, and chats with boogie and R&B legend Leeroy Burgess along the way.
