WIN: Music by Glowworm!

AUDIO: “The Captive”, and “Contrails” By GLOWWORM.
Both taken from the album The Coachlight Woods
It’s dark and misty on them there hills and the only sound is that of mother nature, pounding and tearing her way through the forests and the valleys. Old trees creak and crack in the wind as all living things hide themselves deep underground or indoors. But way up high another kind of music fills the air, one that is embracing the rawness of nature, and matching its wild tantrums of rage and sudden descents to calmness, step for step. That music is Glowworm.
“Jesse (Robert W.) and I took a Uhaul out to a private lodge in St. George, Utah owned by some of his family. We wanted to get out of our own environment, away from all the other music we were involved in- to try to make something special and forgoe imaginative limitations, I guess,” Kevin Davis- one half of atmospheric orchestral-rock band Glowworm- told me when asked to describe the recording process of their debut album The Coachlight Woods. “We really felt inspired by the surroundings in a different way than we would have sitting in a basment studio back in Portland. If you’ve ever been to St. George you’d understand what Imean. The place is amazing. Like an apocalyptic desert out of those old spaghetti western movies.”
The Coachlight Woods is what it is would sound like if Mogwai and Pelican’s tour buses collided in a desert, and they recorded an album over 30 days and 30 nights before being rescued. The album swings between ecstatic highs and melancholic subdue thoughout its eleven tracks, as the songs are guided through epic movements of crunching guitar and orchestration, which is reminscent of groups like Mogwai and Sigur Ros.
Given the restless spirit of Glowworm’s music it’s quite unsurprising that Davis cites lack of sleep as an inspiration: “I studied music composition in college and was writing sonatas and fugues, etc. I’d stay up very late finishing those projects for class but by the end of the night I’d be so sick of so many notes that all i could listen to in bed was drone or ambient music. Music that was totally non-specific, just wallpaper to tint my sonic environment and hopefully calm me to sleep.”
“When i had trouble finding music that didn’t fit my mood, i’d write something myself- like an hour or so of ambient tunes that I could put on and relax to. After awhile I started calling the collection of stuff Glowworm. I don’t really know if my sleep ever improved, though.”

i love the imagery used to describe the album. it fits it perfectly. a great recording story too!!
hey ellie, glad you like the write-up and thanks for entering.
All of these songs are like gently gliding over calm water in the dead of night, surrounded by only the ambience of fireflies and fog. The Coachlight Woods is like a warm musical blanket. When I die, I can only hope to hear Contrails as I fade…

If I had a glowworm, I would be extremely popular with the ladies. Unfortunately, I do not. So can I please have a glowworm and enjoy the lap of luxury! Cheers.
