10 Incredible Art & Design Magazines

I get the feeling that the time is right for a massive list of incredible art & design magazines… So without further ado I present to ye ten, yes TEN, incredible art & design magazines. And I’ve even squeezed in some more that wouldn’t fit. Note that these magazines are not presented in any specific order. Hope you like.

10. WALLSPANKERS

What is it: free .pdf sticker-zine
URL: http://wallspankers.com

Wallspankers zine, screenshot

Possibly the coolest thing since sliced raisin bread, WALLSPANKERS is a high-resolution zine formatted as downloadable .pdf file. The twist is that Wallspankers is designed to be printed as sticker zine, meaning you can spank walls with incredible art, no matter where in the world you are! Currently four issues of the quarterly zine have been released, with new contributions actively encouraged.

9. THE ROYAL MAGAZINE

What is it: a free “journal” of art & design, in pdf format
URL: theroyalmagazine.com

The Royal Magazine, screenshot

From what I know THE ROYAL MAGAZINE a publication put together by an enigmatic global band of creative brothers, known as the Keystone Design Union, or KDU. The mag focuses on “Collisions, Culture and Capitalism” and is a wonderful mash-up of all three, featuring some of the most articulate and cutting edge work I’ve found together in the one place.

8. KINGBROWN MAG

What is it: a print mag of street art, murals, painting, illustration etc.
URL: kingbrownmag.com

King Brown Magazine, previews

KINGBROWN is a print magazine which, as far as I can garner, is based in Australia and features a lavish combination of full and double page artworks across various mediums including: street art, graffiti, design, fashion, music, theatre, illustration and possibly everything else you can imagine. The mag was set up in tandem with exhibitions of artistic work, by a cat called YOK, and two other guys named Ian Mutch and Greg Lewis.

7. RVA MAGAZINE

What is it: a free print & pdf magazine of words & art
URL: rvamag.com

RVA magazine

RVA MAGAZINE is a free .pdf format mag free print & .pdf magazine set up to promote art coming out of Richmond, VA; or in their own words: “RVA is the physical manifestation of our citywide conversation”. The artwork within RVA is immense, with interviews and features displayed in a tidy minimalist style beside music reviews and quite a few adverts. The RVA team also produce a bi-annual CD/DVD of “new music and videos, movie trailers and promos”, which comes to magazine subscribers and is distributed free at various points and events throughout the city.

6. CARPAL TUNNEL MAG {R.I.P}

What is it: sadly-deceased online mag, now a blog, yay!
URL: carpaltunnelmag.com / carpaltunnelmagazine.blogspot.com

Carpal Tunnel Magazine

Discovering CARPAL TUNNEL MAGAZINE came a little for me, because the next time I logged on to their site, there was a notice saying that the mag was no more. Which is a shame because the mag had plenty of interviews with D.I.Y art activists, musicians, designers, and was a pretty humble and decent online publication. Thankfully though, Carpal Tunnel is now a blog, and still gets to showcase the same styles of work as their website always did.

5. CANDY MAGAZINE

What is it: free .pdf magazine on art, design, fashion etc.
URL: candycollective.com

Candy Magazine, preview

CANDY MAGAZINE is another free .pdf which is a visual delight; mixing art, craft, fashion etc (you get the drift by now…) and impresses with it’s layout and hefty 270-page beastliness. It is the first on this list that seems to be based in the UK & Ireland, which is a plus for me living in the UK as I do. The Candy Collective also sell art and host events from Dublin to Limerick to Newcastle upon Tyne.

4. BLOODWARS MAGAZINE

What is it: free .pdf magazine on art, design & graffiti.
URL: bloodwarsmagazine.com

Bloodwars Magazine, preview

BLOODWARS MAGAZINE’S “intention is to expose the various forms and styles of Street Bombing and whatever else I find stimulating out in the world.” The aforementioned “I” seems to be the enigmatic SFAUSTINA, a globe-trotting graphic designer who’s also had a hand in creating KINGBROWN MAG, and has had work exhibited in such far-flung places as Ohio, Berlin and Australia. Bloodwars is definitely one for graff-heads and street artists, but has plenty of other goodness as well.

3. EARZ MAGAZINE

What is it: a free blogzine about art, music, design & culture.
URL: earz-mag.com

Earz Magazine, screenshot

What can I say about EARZ MAGAZINE except that you’re already reading it. It is my very own creation of music, art, design and miscellaneous cool stuff, all blended together and stirred in a big melting pot of goodness. If you’re new here you might find these links helpful: our RSS feedAbout Earz Magazine

2. BEAUTIFUL/DECAY MAGAZINE

What is it: a print magazine on art, graphic design etc.
URL: beautifuldecay.com

Beautiful Decay Magazine, inlay

BEAUTIFUL / DECAY began its life humbly as a black and white zine from the streets of Fairfax, Virginia, and has blown up to it’s present day incarntion as a “full-color publication boasting an international distribution of more than 45,000 copies”, and also “has transcended the page to curate art shows, create branded books, develop event sponsorship programs, and launch a highly recognized artist’s series apparel line and various limited-edition products”. They also have one of the dopest websites I’ve seen in a while.

1. JUXTAPOZ MAGAZINE

What is it: an art & culture print mag, and website
URL: juxtapoz.com

Juxtapoz Magazine, cover

Probably the best known of contemporary art magazines, JUXTAPOZ have an awesome print magazine crammed full of great art and features, plus a great blog which is viewed by thousands daily, and even includes the occasional interview. You can probably find a copy of Juxatpoz in your local art or Borders store, if you live near one, otherwise you can order it directly from their website.

BOOYA– that’s it. Hope you enjoyed the list, and remember, it’s in no particular order, so please, no ranting about “this mag should have been here”, and “why was this mag only number…”, etc. If you know an incredible art & design mag that we missed, then drop us a comment below so people can check them out.
