Students Launch Landmark Media Site

A network of students across US schools and colleges have launched the first-ever daily national student newspaper, to provide “in-depth and innovative coverage” of the 2008 presidential election. Scoop08.com is believed to reflect a shift in student’s interests towards the nation’s troubled political system, and will function in key with other contemporary online media by providing “a transparent, two-way dialogue” with its readers.
It seems like a natural step for a student body whose political consciousness has been prized open by the debacle surrounding war in Iraq, oppressive new national policies, and directly-related attacks like the “don’t tase me, bro!” incident in September; in the words of the website’s organisers “people are excited to move forward, and they are willing - perhaps for the first time in a while - to care”. But should anybody listen? It looks like it: the BBC reports that people aged 21-29 will make up 25% of the electorate in 2008, and further they “may account for a full third of the electorate by 2015”, which is roughly the share of vote that a party needs to hold primacy in Government.
