Björk Tops Connect Fest: a Flickr Tribute

September 3, 2007 · Words: Martin S ·

I’m just back from the first ever Connect Music Festival in Inverary, where I enjoyed revelling with the 16,000 or so who turned up for a long-weekend of camping and music set to the historical backdrop of Inverary Castle. Branded by organisers as a “boutique” festival, Connect targeted a maturer crowd with better taste than is usual at T in the Park (Scotland’s biggest music festival), and the odd tag was reinforced by a smorgasbord of enchanced eateries– meaning you could hit the fresh fish, barbeque, or noodle bars at 1 in the morning if the festival staple of £3 meatburgers was growing stale.

Musical highlights for me included the following: Björk’s spellbinding performance at sun-down on Sunday evening, the Beastie Boys bringing a dose of NYC to the highlands, Glasgow’s Brazillian-drumming institution Samba ya Bamba, Steve Reid and Kieren Hebden, and the Kazoo Funk Orchestra. Festival quirks included mud-madness in the campsite on Saturday night, bootleg programmes, egomaniacal security (though most of them were fine), tent robberies (about 90 tents raided on Friday night apparently), and finally, the mud.
